Overview - MSc Student Internship Position - Rewrite of the ‘Urlabuse’ infrastructure
‘Urlabuse’ is a twofold service created by CIRCL. First it serves the purpose to help identifying malicious or suspicious websites (e.g. phishing or malware hosting sites) and inform CIRCL about their existence. Secondly, ‘Urlabuse’ does an automatic lookup of all relevant contact information in reference to the reported website in order to increase the reaction level of CIRCL to request the take-down of such identified websites.
‘Urlabuse’ consists of different tools: the Urlabuse software itself, the web frontend part, the ‘WHOIS’ backend called ‘uwhoisd’ and different scripts that integrate between the ticket system RT and Urlabuse. The software interacts with other software as well, like ‘BGP Ranking’, ‘Google Safebrowsing’, ‘VirusTotal’, ‘Phishtank’, ‘pDNS/pSSL’ and ‘urlquery’.
Most of the code is written in python, some scripts in BASH exist.
The current code runs stable. Since the first version new requirements with new features and improvements were introduced, and the project grew organically so that a reorganization, refactoring or rewrite of the code would be appropriate.
Your task is to understand the code and interfaces to other services and bring the code to the next level.
Your work will be part of the daily activities of CIRCL and for countless people doing lookups against our web service.
